The data was collected through self-administered questionnaires from a stratified random sample of students attending junior and senior high schools, from grades 6 through 12.
This study is the second drug use survey of rural Alberta high schools, the purpose again to determine the patterns and trends in drug use by rural students and to provide a data base for future evaluation of this population.
Questions dealt with the frequency of use of 12 drugs by the respondent, his perception of parental drug use, knowledge of drugs and drug sources and other demographics and socio-economic questions.
Variables include: grade; school code; age; sex; school program; parents' place of birth; language spoken by parents; length of residence in Alberta; time attending Alberta schools; family religion; household composition; parents' work shift; father's occupation, education; mother's education; overall school average; intentions on leaving school; siblings; allowance per week; siblings' use of drugs; parents' use of tobacco, alcohol; access to marijuana; knowledge of parents' use of tranquilizers, stimulants or pep pills, barbiturates or sleeping pills, illegal drugs; parents' abuse of drugs; R's use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, glue, solvents, barbiturates, opiates, speed, stimulants, tranquilizers, LSD, other hallucinogens; R's use of individual drugs, including when first tried, when R most likely to use, why R stopped using the drug, whether R's parents know; bad trips; illness from drinking alcohol, use of other drugs; no. times R sought help; knowledge of harmful effects; definition of grass, dime bag; definition of grass, dime bag; influence of others; use of drugs at parties, school; leisure activities; confidence in parents, friends for help; family activity; feelings about parents; discussing drugs with family, friends, teachers; drug education in school; effects of use of alcohol.
