The study was conducted by Richard Hamilton and Maurice Pinard from the Department of Sociology at McGill University as part of fieldwork by L'Institut de Cueillette de l'Information. The data was collected through telephone interviews using a cross-sectional random sample of telephone subscribers who were eligible voters.
This survey of the Quebec electorate was carried out a few weeks after the October 29, 1973 provincial election.
Variables include: R's opinion of family financial situation over the past year; opinion of actins of principal labour unions; for or against separatism of Quebec; length of time R has been for separation of Quebec; rate of change in Quebec; whether voted in October provincial election; vote recall; when R decided for whom to vote; reason for vote; if Parti Quebecois had not been in favour of Quebec Independence would R have voted for them; importance for R's vote decision of issues such as economic problems, separation of Quebec, satisfaction with liberal government, programme of the Parti Quebecois on non-independence issues, corruption of old parties; 1970 provincial election vote recall; 1972 federal election vote recall; attitude toward difference in incomes between the rich and the poor; attitude toward federal system, should provinces or Ottawa have more power; images of the provincial parties; the provincial party for which R would hesitate to vote for; are the separation of Quebec and the independence of Quebec synonymous or different; for or against Quebec becoming an independent country.
Demographic variables include: number of persons over 18 years of age in household, number of males over 18 years of age in household; family employment status in pat 2 years; age; education; marital status, whether or not the head of household; R's occupation; labour union membership; occupation of head of household; labour union membership of head of household; is R French-Canadian, English-Canadian, Italian-Canadian or Canadian of other origin; total family income category; sex; language of interview; type of community; size of community; political region; strength of Parti Quebecois in district in 1973; geographic region.
