ETOPO5 combines the data set DBDB5 (5-minute grid of worldwide bathymetry) and additional data which constitute a 5-minute grid of worldwide topography. Digital land and seafloor elevations were assembled from several uniformly gridded data bases into a worldwide gridded data set with a grid spacing of 5-min latitude by 5-min longitude. Oceanic bathymetry was compiled by the U.S. Naval Oceanographic office; this data set covers all oceans and is known as the 'Digital bathymetric data base, 5 minute' or DBDB5. The land elevations for most of North America, Western Europe, and Japan came from 5-min gridded data supplied by the Defense Mapping Agency. Land elevations in Australia and New Zealand came from 5-min gridded data supplied by the Bureau of Mineral Resources of Australia and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research of New Zealand. The balance of the land elevations were derived from 10-min gridded modal height data supplied by the U.S. Naval Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center. The Earth and Planetary Remote Sensing Laboratory, Washington University, St. Louis, integrated the four data bases into a single 5-min reference for the entire globe. The FNOC data were resampled onto a 5-min grid to match the rest of the data used. The first application of these data was a set of relief maps of the world, published as NGDC Report MGG-2. The bathymetric portion of this version of ETOPO5 is in uncorrected metres (ETOPO5U).
