Merged data file of Canadian Gallup surveys [machine-readable data file] compiled by J.A. Laponce, with the assistance of David Fenn, Jeffrey Rustand, John R. Wright, Kirk Cooper, and Helen Ray. Based on data originally collected by Canadian Gallup Poll Ltd. Vancouver, B.C.
The object of compiling this file was to facilitate the analysis of regional differences in political attitudes and behaviour in Canada.
This composite file contains at present only data from the Canadian Gallup surveys; it may eventually be expanded to include data from other Canadian surveys.
Unfortunately, the data from the earliest surveys conducted by the Canadian Institute of Public Opinion (the predecessor to Canadian Gallup Poll Ltd.) have been irretrievably lost. The earliest survey available in the form of an original machine-readable data file was conducted in May of 1945. Regular bimonthly data files are not available until the early 1950's.
During the summer of 1979, John Wright, working under the direction of J.A. Laponce, compiled standardized coding schemes for those variables commonly occurring in almost all CIPO polls including demographic variables (age, sex, income, union membership, education, occupation, family size, religion, etc) vote recall and vote intention. He then started converting individual data files to the common format. This work was continued during the subsequent summers by Messers Fenn, Rustand, and Cooper, and Miss Ray.
