The data was collected through self-administered questionnaires from a stratified random sample of students attending junior and senior high schools, from grades 6 through 12.
This study is the third drug use survey of rural Alberta high schools, previous surveys having been conducted in 1971 and 1974.
Questions dealt with the frequency of use of 8 categories of illicit drugs, as well as items dealings with the frequency of use of cigarettes and alcohol. Additional items pertaining to alcohol use were added, dealing with amount of consumption, where and when consumed, as well as personal and social problems associated with alcohol use. Reliability was assessed by readministering the questionnaire after a two-week interval.
Variables include: grade; school code; age; sex; school program; parents' place of birth; language spoken by parents; length of residence in Alberta; time attending Alberta schools; family religion; current religion; father's occupation, education; mother's education; overall school average; use of tobacco in past 6 months, marijuana, glue, barbiturates, opiates, speed, tranquilizers, cocaine, solvents; drugs taken under medical supervision; use of alcohol in past 6 moths, with whom, where; average amounts of liquor consumed at a session; results from use of alcohol; (if 16 years old or over) driver's licence; experience with drinking and driving, charged with driving after drinking; traffic accidents.
