The survey was conducted by Colleen Tobman and Walter Harrington for the Canadian Association of College and University Libraries. The data was collected from persons employed as librarians in university or college libraries in Canada through mail questionnaires.
The questionnaire was meant to survey the academic status of librarians at both colleges and universities, especially relative to faculty.
Variables include: Name of college or university; highest level of its academic program; size of the library; R's professional degree or certification; the nature of librarians' appointment and tenure/job security relative to faculty; whether librarians are considered faculty, staff, or other; whether the administration handles the appointment, promotion, tenure, dismissal, appeals of librarians the same they do faculty; whether librarians have the same economic benefits and fringe benefits as faculty; whether they are paid extra for teaching or unusual shifts; whether they have access to institutional research funds; whether they have the same leave benefits and vacation period as faculty; whether they are eligible to participate in the same university organizations as faculty; whether they have the protection of academic freed, whether they are required to do research or publish in order to advance.
