Seven major surveys were conducted as part of this research project to measure the impact of community colleges on students, the educational system, and the community.
Socio-economic survey of post-secondary students, 1971: In the fall of 1971, students entering post-secondary educational institutions were surveyed in order to assess their socio-economic backgrounds. The questionnaire contained items relating to parents' education, occupation, income, etc., as well as source of educational funds, father's place of birth, and several questions related to health status.
Opinion questionnaire of post secondary students, 1971: In the fall of 1971, an opinion questionnaire was administered to students entering first year at the community colleges and technical institute. Responses were elicited on educational expectations, life plans, objectives at college, knowledge of the college, college educational methodology, college involvement, and general public issues. Demographic data included.
Grade 12 student survey, 1972: In the spring of 1972, the entire Grade 12 public school population was surveyed. Questions included future educational goals, source of influence, source of life satisfaction, immediate further education, choice of post-secondary institution, source of funds, factors in selection of post-secondary institution, and standard demographic variables such as date of birth, sex, educational attainment, parents' occupations, parents' education, income.
Post-secondary student survey, 1972: In the fall of 1972, students entering community colleges, universities, vocational schools, and the technical institute were surveyed. Questions consisted primarily of those in the 1971 Socio-economic survey and the Opinion questionnaire.
College faculty questionnaire, 1973: In 1973, a survey of college faculty was conducted at most of the public schools in B.C. Questions included such topics as the Public Schools Act, college curricula, the Ministry of Education, most important problems facing colleges, objectives of post-secondary education, 'general education,' student involvement in policy making, grading, college councils, evaluation of instructional effectiveness, criteria for promotion, and other questions relation to the structure of colleges, as well as standard demographic data, and time-use data.
Survey of the business community's views, 1974: In 1974, a questionnaire was mailed to Vancouver Board of Trade members to survey the business community's views of community college graduates. Questions included several relating to type and size of business, educational personnel, recruiting difficulties, objectives of post-secondary education, formal training versus job performance, potential salary and job prospects of community college graduates, career courses.
